Spring Do's and Don'ts
Mother Nature has definitely put us on a roller coaster ride since the beginning of February. And when it comes to your lawn and spring applications, you just have to “roll” with it this time of year. With more than 140 years’ experience in the industry, our technicians have seen it all! When the temperatures warm up, everyone seems to get a little anxious regarding their applications, especially pre-emergent or weed control.
Even though the air temperature may be warm, the soil temperature is what you need to be most concerned about. Right now, soil conditions are still very cold and wet, making it less than favorable for any crabgrass pre-emergent. If you apply the treatment too early, it will not be as effective. This is also true for seeding. We usually don’t feel comfortable seeding until the soil is warm enough to plant flowers or vegetables. Normally, that occurs around Mother’s Day, weather permitting of course.
While we’re still in a holding pattern for turf work, it is actually a great time for certain tree care applications. For example, right now is the time for a dormant oil application to protect your trees and shrubs from over wintering, pests, and new egg hatch. Dormant oil is considered environmentally friendly and non-invasive. If you’re not on our schedule already, give us a call for a free estimate! (815)332-9544. And remember, we build great lawns (and trees) from the ground up!
