Ornamental Value

Hummelo Betony, also known as Alpine Betony is another favorite at LCbW. It is a wonderful border plant in sunny locations. Hummelo Betony grows a tight, low growing mound of dark green foliage in the spring that does expand as it matures. The foliage alone is attractive and makes a nice groundcover. Midsummer bright purple-pink spikes of flowers emerge above the foliage. A heavy bloomer, this Betony makes a great companion plant to Coreopsis, Daisies, Coneflower, and Allium. Hummelo Betony fits into pollinator gardens too as the flowers are attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. After the long blooming period has ended you can either deadhead them to leave the clean foliage and maybe even promote a second bloom. Or the blooms can be left to dry and be enjoyed as fall and winter texture interest in the garden. Alpine Betony is extremely hardy to our midwestern winters and is quite adaptable as long as it receives good drainage and adequate sunlight.
